Richard Harold O'Brien

May 22, 1943 — May 21, 2026

Richard Harold O'Brien, 82, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on May 21, 2026. He was born on May 22, 1943, in Oklahoma to Holly and Marie O'Brien. As a young child, he moved with his family to California, where he built a life centered on education, service, sports, and family.

Richard excelled academically and athletically throughout high school. At Porterville High School, he was recognized for his accomplishments in track and field, earning numerous medals and trophies throughout his youth. His name was proudly displayed on the school wall for many years for his achievements in relay track, though he rarely spoke about it himself. He carried a lifelong love for sports, competition, and the quiet pride that came from hard work and determination.

He married Neva Cope, and together they raised their children, James and Rhonda O'Brien. Richard deeply loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren, and that love was always returned to him fully.

Dedicated to education and helping others, Richard continued his studies and earned two master's degrees. He spent his professional life as a social worker at Porterville Developmental Center, devoting many years to serving and supporting others in his community. His favorite pastimes included golfing whenever he could, going to the casino with his son-in-law, and traveling the world with friends.

Later in life, Richard renewed and regained his faith in God, which brought him comfort and peace.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved son, James O'Brien; his brother, Johnny Watts; and his parents, Holly and Marie O'Brien. He leaves behind his daughter, Rhonda Mosqueda; his grandchildren, Jamie Schultz and Ciarra Richardson; his son-in-law, Art Mosqueda; his brother, Ron O'Brien; extended family; and many friends and loved ones who will forever cherish his intelligence, athletic spirit, dedication to others, and deep love for his family. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered always.
