Margaret Alice Hughes

July 7, 1941 — April 18, 2024

Margaret A. Hughes, 82, passed away on April 18, 2024 at her home in Porterville, CA surrounded by her husband, Marvin Hughes, her daughter, Susie Jones, grandson Jarred Hughes, and caregiver Sarah Conley.

Margaret was born July 7, 1941 in Visalia, CA to Halver and Esther Haddock. She was the second born of 5 girls Ann, Mildred, Mary and Marie.

Margaret grew up in Visalia working on her father's farm, driving a tractor and irrigating. She had a passionate and loving demeanor with an immense work ethic. Her school years were filled with many accolades, awards and accomplishments, including being a member of Linwood 4-H, earning Tulare county 4-H All-Star award, and a state Diamond Star Candidate. In 1960, Margaret was the National Frozen Food winner in 4-H and won a trip to Chicago to the National 4-H Congress.

Margaret graduated from Mount Whitney High School in 1958. While a student in HS, she played the flute in the marching band and played the violin. She received an Associates of Arts degree from College of Sequoias in 1960. Margaret worked for California Farm Bureau Marketing Association, Fresno County key punch operator and many years as a bookkeeper for Guthrie Farming and Cattle Company.

Margaret married Marvin Hughes in 1963 and celebrated their 60th anniversary this past September. She worked for Fresno County as a key punch operator while Marvin attended Fresno State. After Marvin finished college, they moved back to Porterville, and she worked as a bookkeeper for Guthrie Farming and Cattle Company. They started a family and had two children, Douglas in 1966 and Susan in 1967. Margaret was a loving wife and mother.

Margaret spent most of her married years on the Hughes Farm driving a tractor, irrigating, and bookkeeping for the farm. Margaret loved to bake for family and friends during holidays and special events. She was famous for her dinner rolls. Other hobbies included sewing, food preservation and tending to her strawberries, blackberries and roses. She was a 4-H Leader, was active at the Porterville Fair, volunteered at Sunnyside Elementary School, managed Bobby Sox Softball teams and was a CIF Volleyball referee for several years. Margaret will be remembered for her devotion to family and friends. Her kind heart and devotion to volunteer throughout her community will be missed by all who knew Margaret.

In 2011 while traveling to Oregon to see her daughter and her family, Marvin and Margaret were involved in serious automobile accident which changed their lives forever. Margaret suffered severe injuries that resulted in being paralyzed. She spent the last thirteen years living with her injury with a positive attitude and never complained about her situation.

Family is not only the people living under the same roof. Family is everyone you pick up along the way during your life. This includes Sarah Conley who became Margaret's caregiver since her life changing accident. The family cannot underestimate their gratitude and extend their deepest thanks to Sarah for her years as Margaret's devoted caregiver. Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
