Gary Earl Michael Smith

It is with great sadness that the family of Gary E.M. Smith, O.D., announces his passing on November 4, 2022. Gary was born on February 21, 1944 to Helen (Souza) Smith and Kenneth "Curly" Smith in Tulare, California. Gary resided in Tulare, California and then moved to Lemoore, California where he graduated from Lemoore Union High School. Gary served in United States Marine Corps. Gary then earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Smith practiced optometry in Tulare, California for over forty years. Dr. Smith was actively involved in the community and the St. Aloysius Church by serving on the Tulare Planning Commission, former Tulare City Councilman, Tulare Rotary Club, Former President of Our Lady of Fatima Celebration, Former Chairman and member of the St. Aloysius Centurion Dinner, The Knights of Columbus, and Tulare-Angra do Heroismo Sister City Foundation. Dr. Smith was also a member of local and national optometric groups including Tulare-Kings Counties Optometric Society, California Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. Dr. Smith, aka "The Colonel", enjoyed time spent with friends and family and his travels to many countries including Azores Islands, Portugal, Ireland, Turkey and Bosnia.
Gary is survived by his wife, Pauline, two children Gregory (Jennifer), Gina, two grandchildren Ashley (Jessie) Sanchez, Travis Costa, two great-grandchildren J.T. and Jordan Sanchez and cousins Judy Marshall, Bruce Anderson, Barry Anderson and Linda (Anderson) Kahn.
A Rosary will be recited at St. Aloysius Church, Tulare, California on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 5:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Aloysius Church, 125 E. Pleasant, Tulare, California on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 10:30 AM. Interment to be private.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org < http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org >. Services have been entrusted to Myers Funeral Services in Porterville, California.
