Donald Wayne Wheeler was born in Brawley, California on March 22, 1944. He passed on August 9, 2025 surrounded by his family at home. He was the oldest of two children born to Jarvis Edgar Wheeler and Billie Ann Wheeler. He attended elementary school in Shafter and moved to Porterville shortly before beginning junior high school at Bartlett. He went on to Porterville High, where he was so proud to share stories about being a left-handed pitcher on the Varsity Baseball team as a freshman. After graduating, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served from 1966-1968 as a finance clerk during the Vietnam War. He stood so proud of his military service, passing on his love of his country to his family.
He met and married Peggy Miller on February 6, 1971. They settled in Porterville where he worked for his family's business, Wheeler Furniture. He later opened Wheeler's Heritage Waterbed Store and after its closing he began his dream job as the day custodian at Porterville High School until his retirement in June of 2006. Don was a true panther who bled orange and green his whole life. He always had a strong work ethic and loved helping others. He loved watching Yankees baseball games with his grandkids, working with his model trains, and he brought great joy to many during Christmas time through his Santa business for 20 years. His greatest love and legacy was truly his family though.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peggy Wheeler, two daughters, Jenifer Sanders (Bret) of Springville and Shannon Poulsen (Charles) of Payson, Utah, seven amazing grandchildren, and three precious great-granddaughters.
The family would like to thank Sam Ballew, his caregiver, for her unwavering love and support.
