Wayland Dale George

Wayland Dale George, 94, of Strathmore, California, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2022 in the presence of family. He was the only child of Henry Krum George and Blanche Thompson George and was born in Hico, Texas on July 7, 1927.
Wayland graduated from Strathmore High School, received his Bachelor’s degree from Fresno State College, and a master’s in Nuclear Physics from Stanford University. He was involved in early studies on the effects of radiation. In 1974, he left the nuclear industry and returned to Strathmore to continue the family farming operation. He was very innovative and was one of the early farmers to produce pecans, kiwifruit, apples, and Mercots in the Central San Joaquin Valley.
He was married to Joan Stevenson George in 1955, who survives him. Wayland is also survived by sons, Michael George and wife Jonelle, David George and wife Keely; daughter, Diane Canty and husband Kevin; as well as nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
He was a voracious reader and was conversant on many and varied topics. Church attendance was important to him throughout his lifetime.
Wayland was an Electronic Technician’s Mate Second in the US Navy and will be buried in a private graveside service at Bakersfield National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a later date. The family suggests that donations be made to Samaritan’s Purse Ministry in lieu of flowers.
